Manus Bio scientists have published a review article entitled “Biotechnological production of natural zero-calorie sweeteners.” The paper was published in Current Opinion in Biotechnology (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0958166914000081).
Increased public awareness on the adverse health effects of excessive sugar consumption has led to a resurgence in interest in plant-derived, natural low-calorie or zero-calorie sweeteners. The published article delves into the properties of high-potency natural sweeteners from two plant species, Stevia rebaudiana and Siraitia grosvenorii, and describes the key biotechnological innovations necessary to realize commercial-scale production of these important ingredients. “There remains a strong need for high performing natural sweeteners to replace sugar in a variety of food and beverage products” said Dr. Ajikumar Parayil, Ph.D., Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Manus Bio. “At Manus Bio, we are committed to applying our advanced microbial platform to deliver non-caloric sweeteners which can have a positive impact on human nutrition and health.”
